Here are some helpful tips from people taking FPU right now:
- We have stopped ordering in – pizza. We are eating more at home
- I am using grocery store coupons more than ever. When I make my shopping list I put a “C” by the item I have a coupon for to remind me.
- We are getting coupons on line as well as the newspaper
- We have signed up for “Groupon” for discounts and are looking for other websites that will get us discounts.
- We are planning meals and sticking to the menu
- Buy gas from ARCO or get a Safeway member card (they’re free”) as they have inexpensive gas also.
- I have taken a part time, 2nd job – a paper route
- I am packing a lunch almost everyday now.
- We are paying “non credit reporting” bills every other month, i.e. gas, electricity and putting the rest of the money toward our emergency fund.
- I am saying “no” to spending and putting the money I would have said “yes” to in my emergency fund.
- Just doing the quickie budget made us realize are spending is out of control.
- Don’t go grocery shopping when you are hungry.
- As much as I like to save by buying in bulk at Sam’s Club I researched even better bulk deals on Amazon.com, that include free shipping (i.e. coffee, school supplies, pet meds, etc.)
- Whenever we get an oil change at Jiffy Lube they’re more than willing to take a promo code if you forgot your coupon or if it expired. Google the establishment for coupons or I reference www.dealnews.comon my smartphone.
- Some stores will take an expired coupon. All you have to do is ask.
